Between 1966 and 1967, the Mothman terrified countless residents of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, securing a place in modern American folklore. The black-winged creature with glowing red eyes was blamed for the deaths of 46 people and became a nationwide news story. The monster was considered a portent of doom and tapped into the late 60s zeitgeist of fear in a nation already coming apart at the seams with civil rights protests, assassinations and an escalating war in South East Asia.
