Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey, had been released the year before the actual moon landing in 1969. Most striking was the scene set on the moon, in which a group of astronauts, descend into an excavation where the human race comes into contact with an alien monolith. Though shot in a studio, it looks exactly like the real moon landing that followed it. Kubrick used no CGI, no computer-created effects. Everything is real.
