Many of the great Californian board shapers were working in and around north county San Diego during the early 1970s. Every other garage, shack or any type of shelter was turned into a shaping room or glass shop. There were a lot of name factories, including: Channin, Sunset, Hansen, Surfboards Hawaii, Nectar and more than a few underground shops.
Sunflower Surfboards out of Encinitas specialised in designs by airbrush artist John Breedon. With a small store on the Coast Highway not far from Swami’s they created an impact on the scene with their far-out board shapes and artwork.
