So, how did Armor Lux get its start?
How This Brand Influenced The World
It all started in Finistère, Quimper. A Swiss engineer named Walter Hubacher founded the company on the 7th of October in 1938. The brand was originally called Bonneterie d'Armor, and it specialised in underwear and lingerie.
The years passed, and hardships affected France and the world, but Walter Hubacher didn’t let life’s obstacles stifle his creativity or his drive to create quality products. He bought a plot of land in 1947 and created his first workshop, which held 50 people.
Like many artists, creators and visionaries, Walter Hubacher loved the sea. You can even still see how influential the sea and maritime clothing were to him in today’s Armor Lux collection. Walter Hubacher soon decided to grow his company by designing and creating ready-to-wear clothing.
Using the same high standards he had for Bonneterie d'Armor, he created outerwear that was second to none. Thus, Armor Lux was born. (‘Armor’ meaning ‘the sea,’ and ‘lux’ meaning ‘light.’)
From then on, the company only grew larger, more reputable and more beloved. This once-small brand was transitioning from a promising start to a fashion brand adored by countless people of all different backgrounds.
The company grew to 600 hardworking employees in the early 1980s; what a change! They’d come a long way from having a small 50-person workshop.
Armor Lux was now known for its comfortable and fashionable clothing that was made from natural materials like cotton and wool. You could easily dress head-to-toe in distinctive clothing that would make you stand out for all the right reasons, while staying warm and cosy.
There are countless ways to dress up or down Armor Lux’s clothing, like their iconic Breton tops, so creating complete looks was easy.
Time passed, and Walter Hubacher encountered two of his childhood friends once more in the 1990s. His friends, Jean-Guy Le Floch and Michel Guéguen, then bought Bonneterie d'Armor from him, and the company was now under new management.
The new owners worked hard to make the brand even better than it already was. The company only grew bigger and more widespread. Their network of retailers grew, as did their collection of impeccable clothing, bringing them more favourable attention and loyal customers.
Even in 2023, Armor Lux continues to create gorgeous pieces for people of all ages. This amazing brand has grown quite a lot from being the passionate dream of one man.
